In November 1944, bombs destroyed many lodgings in the south of the Netherlands, sending on the
roads thousands of people. 170 of them, catholics and dutch speaking, went all the way north to
Tytsjerk in Friesland, Protestant and Friesian speaking. All 170 refugees were hosted in farmers’
houses until April 1945. To celebrate this extraordinary fact, I built a large table and went door
to door to invite today’s inhabitants of Tytsjerk to participate by offering one plate each, which I
set on the table.
