A patch to process the river's bounds

IMG_6458.jpeg

Commissioned for the Stellenbosch Art Mile, this work focuses on the region’s flora and the complexity
of the Eerste River as a witness to the lives of indigenous peoples as well as the arrival of settlers
and subsequent foreign horticulture and agriculture. The work interweaves dead, dried invasive
saplings from Coetzenburg with living indigenous plants collected along the river, consulting with
landscape architect Katy Rennie and linking Stellenbosch University’s Botanical Garden, Centre for
Invasion Biology, and Environmental Services. This artwork adapts, grows, composts, and re-germinates
seasonally, responding directly to its environment. Over time, the woven invasive mat may become
“lost” within a simple patch of indigenous green and yellow, reflecting the iterative and
transformative nature of the landscape.
