Hyacinth (ongoing project)

DSC01271.jpg

The hyacinth is an aggressively invasive aquatic plant originally from the Amazon which was introduced
as an exotic pond plant in South Africa in the early 1900s. It can now be found blocking almost every
Cape Town waterway, deoxygenating the water and devastating local fauna and flora. I harvest hyacinth
from several waterways around Cape Town, drying it for weaving or boiling and pulping it for paper. My
exploration of the hyacinth is an ongoing project. The outcomes of this project vary from individual
works to large-scale installations, public workshops, and waterway clearing
