At a time when the Earth is fully revealed to us via the Internet, certain places nonetheless remain
deeply mysterious. A case in point - still unexplained - is a white pattern etched directly into the
dark grey-black ground of the Gobi Desert (Google Earth 40°27’12.45 N / 93°44’35.45 E). These lines
inevitably call to mind other geoglyphs: the Nazca Lines and the Paracas Candelabra in Peru, the
Uffington White Horse in England, the Marree Man in Australia, Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty in
the USA, Richard Long’s A Line Made by Walking… But what is the meaning of this enigmatic design
carved into the Chinese landscape? A hoax, a scientific experiment, a military secret? The mystery
remains… Contrefaçon draws inspiration from this, redrawing an interlacing pattern of broken lines
upon the waters of the Canal des Pêcheurs—a counterpoint to the arid, desert terrain that hosts the
original. Is the aim to give free rein to our imagination and offer our minds a solution to this
