The Periwinkle Shelter is part of the Culture Spark Project. installed at Earnley Viewpoint in the
Medmerry Nature Reserve on the Manhood Peninsula just west of Selsey. 4.5m tall it made headlines for
its spiral design which many locals compared to a giant “poop emoji”. It also reflects the site’s
Bronze and Middle Age history, as periwinkles were found in the remains of an ancient medieval fish
basket by archaeologists
