THE HEAD IS ROUND SO THAT THE DIRECTION OF THOUGHT CAN CHANGE
Matthias Block picks up on empty spaces, seemingly inconspicuous things, in order to sharpen our
gaze. The familiar flashes up as unfamiliar for a moment.
Trained as an engineer in the optimisation of technical functions, he takes everyday objects apart,
rebuilds them, and changes their semantics and use. In doing so, he masterfully succeeds in
transforming the actual circumstances of how we use an object into a sculpture that does not reveal
the original material at first glance. Together, the two visualise our emotions while using the
original object and, in retrospect, even manage to trigger them in a congenial way.
Matthias Block juggles with this ambiguity in his clearly conceptualised installations. The art of
presenting something as new and unique, so that we do not recognise the reference at first glance.
This opens up a second level in our perception that sharpens the senses. His temporary installations
leave us with a new awareness of our surroundings. Nothing is as it seems at first glance!
Through his analytical thinking and conceptual skills, the artist Matthias Block succeeds in
bringing the essence of things to life in a new context – and giving the invisible a recognisable
face, even if only at second glance.
WHY TEMPORARY?
You only really see your surroundings when they lose their familiarity. When you are forced to
perceive them anew. Matthias Block’s temporary large-scale installations achieve precisely that. For
a limited period of time, they challenge the viewer to look at things in a new and more precise way.
His works always operate at the interface between the familiar and the unfamiliar, blurring the
categories of our perception and integrating an unsettling moment into our everyday experience. This
moment is limited in time in order to make its absence perceptible.
